Journal Entry #8 - Facing Fake News

The amount of information that is given in the photograph leads to many questions towards its credibility. The photograph shows the deformed flowers but, the information that accompanies the photograph is not enough to back up the photo. There could be speculation that the photograph was photoshopped. This could be a subject of fake news. There are no scientific facts that back up the photographs reasoning. There also are no other references/sources other than the photo itself. The evidence provided does not seem to be strong enough to be believable. Although the photo evidence is a strong point, there is just not enough extra information to back it up. Questions that immediately rise in my mind are, "are the grounds safe enough to walk on, only years after the nuclear disaster?". There is too many loose ends to immediately trust the article. To verify this claim, I would go into a deep research. I would find sources that are involved on sight and have a knowledge of the ma

Laws have been passed to protect journalists in their hunt to find out the truth. The dirty details can now be discovered without the constant worry of being personally attacked by the law. The journalists will now be protected from police surveillance and search warrants. The protection is under the "Journalistic Source Protection Act" (Bill S-231). This came into act because, Montreal police was spying on journalists who were releasing information that could be embarrassing to the person targeted. It is now almost impossible for security agencies to acquire warrants against journalists unless a judge becomes involved. Only superior court judges will be able to grant these warrants. Justices of the peace can no longer grant the warrants which is important because, many justices of peace work extremely close with the police force. The ability to grant a search warrant will now be a much longer process and have a more just reasoning in doing so. The bill also gives the journal

Reflection: I often wonder what is really real and what is not.  When I am not on a trusted website, these thoughts really flow into my brain.  A person never really knows how much of the information that they are receiving is false.  There are so many websites out there that are in competition so, there is always the option that they put in a little extra information to make the article more appealing to viewers.  The reporters also could make up these lies for the chance to be in the spotlight.  Everyone wants their five minutes of fame and by having a big story, the reporters ego could be boosted.  There are a few websites that I trust and don't have too many worries when I read their information.  Bardown.com is always a trusted website in my opinion, as well as CTV News.  My reaction to the articles was shock.  In my opinion, someone in a professional position should not lie to the public.  I was second hand embarrassed for these reporters, I could not begin to imagine how

Journal Entry #5 - Hard News vs. Soft News

"Michael's essay - Carnage on the streets of Toronto" The article on CBC is most definitely hard news.  The article explains the alarming rate at which Toronto drivers are running over pedestrians.  This has a big effect on the world and the people reading the article.  It is an extremely big issue and needs to be dealt with.  The population, especially of Toronto and surrounding areas need to be informed of the wicked drivers in the city.  In the past five years, more than 150 pedestrians and cyclists have been killed.  This is an alarming rate and is increasing quite quickly.  The cyclists are taking on the mindset of car drivers which is very dangerous.  These events are immediate news and affect many people.  This article showcases important information about a problem that needs to be addressed quickly. "English hockey player goes top shelf with a ridiculous between-the-legs-goal" This article on Bardown.com is a soft news report.  This article exp

Journal Entry #4 - Newsworthy

"Remparts player gets major and game misconduct for this glass-shattering hit on Rimouski player" Timing-  4/4 This is a news story on a very dirty hit that was made by a QMJHL player.  The hit occurred on October 15th, 2017 so, the timing of it is quite recent.  I gave it a 4/4 on timing because the article is extremely current and was uploaded to Bardown.com basically right after the game. Significance-  2/4 This story does not really have an effect on a wide group of people.  I only gave it a significance of 2/4 because the only people who would have been affected by this story would be Rimouski Oceanic fans, Quebec Remparts fans, the family members or friends of the Remparts player who hit the Rimouski player and family or friends of the Rimouski player who was hit. Proximity-  3/4 This event occurred in Quebec which is close enough to home.  It hits much closer to home because the players were QMJHL players which that league includes the maritime provinces.

( Picture of damaged building) Local hockey star gives back to tornado-damaged community (headline) A tornado ripped through the community of Lukeville, Czech Republic, destroying the only Arena within 200 km of the community. When NHL player Reuben Scharwinsky, Lukeville native, got wind of this devastating story, he immediately jumped into action.  The tornado split the "Schofield Place" arena practically in half on February 7th, 2018, by February 9th, Scharwinsky had the plans for rebuilding the arena sprung into action. Scharwinsky decided to rebuild the arena that built his career.  The 55 million dollar building is slated to begin construction on April 19th, projected to be fully up and running by October 17th, 2019; just in time for the 2019-2020 hockey season. The building plans include a European sized ice surface, 9 large dressing rooms, including a personal dressing room devoted for the Midget AAA Mariners, Junior A Flagners and EEHL Wildcats.  A personal

Journal Entry #2 - Starting with the Basics

Article #1-  "The Golden Knights Announced Marc-Andre Fleury's                       First Start of the Year With the Perfect Tweet" Who, What, When, Where, and Why: The Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Montreal Canadiens.  Las Vegas was sending some fire comments and sassy remarks towards the Montreal Canadiens franchise. This occurred on September 20th, 2017. The chirping between the two teams happened on Twitter by their respective social media advisers in each teams hometown. This was some friendly fire between two teams during the pre-season.  The knights were just adding some tension between the teams to make their first official season in the NHL a real splash! The Lead: The lead was quite bland in my opinion.  It could have been much better, it did not really grasp the attention of the readers. "The Vegas Golden Knights may be new to the NHL, but they already have one of the leagues strongest social media games."  The quote did not give m
