Journal Entry #6 - A Card Laid is a Card Played

Reflection:

I often wonder what is really real and what is not.  When I am not on a trusted website, these thoughts really flow into my brain.  A person never really knows how much of the information that they are receiving is false.  There are so many websites out there that are in competition so, there is always the option that they put in a little extra information to make the article more appealing to viewers.  The reporters also could make up these lies for the chance to be in the spotlight.  Everyone wants their five minutes of fame and by having a big story, the reporters ego could be boosted.  There are a few websites that I trust and don't have too many worries when I read their information.  Bardown.com is always a trusted website in my opinion, as well as CTV News.

My reaction to the articles was shock.  In my opinion, someone in a professional position should not lie to the public.  I was second hand embarrassed for these reporters, I could not begin to imagine how embarrassing this would be to a reporter.  Fabricating lies is a terrible thing to do, especially when lying to your devoted readers.  This shows how immature and slimy these reporters actually are.  It is immoral to lie in the ways that these reporters did, especially when the lies have such a big impact on other peoples lives.  The truth always comes out eventually, the reporters should have known better than to do such a scheme.  I believe that the reporters got what they deserved; being exposed is a bitter sweet ending for their lies.

Jack Shafer quoted "most liars make things up for the simple reason that they don't have the talent or the ability to get the story any other way." I agree with this statement.  If a person has to lie, they obviously are doing something wrong in their career.  Talented reporters should be able to find a good story and dig deep to get the dirty details.  Although there could be other reasonings behind the reporters decisions to lie, a lot of the time Shafer's quote could be a true reasoning.  The reporters who feel the need to lie, are lacking something in their lives.

I think that every journalist should be prepared to handle the challenges that they will encounter out in the real world.  Colleges and Universities should have all of their journalists equipped with the skills to and be ready to handle the real responsibilities of being a reporter.  The public is putting a lot of trust in these journalists in the immediate media and in other sorts of media.  There is an enormous responsibility when becoming a journalists and these people need to know how to handle the public, scandals, controversies and other issues.  Without having the skills to handle these issues, our media could become extremely wild.

I believe that a newspaper ombudsman can help solve some problems.  Any input is always good to get, for the sole reason of improving.  The constructive criticism that a newspaper would get from this would hopefully lead to future improvements.  At the end of the day, issues arise and not everyone can be pleased but, there is a right and wrong way about approaching a touchy topic.  Another opinion and a opinion that would be valued by the newspaper editors would be important to get when needed.  There are always ways to grow and become a better editor; with input from the newspaper ombudsman, this could benefit the newspapers overall approach.
