Journal Entry #1 - First Newspapers

Reflection Entry #1:

The Delivery of Information-

  • How we recieve information has changed an extreme amount over the years.  Some obvious differences from the historical newspaper is that in todays world there are endless amounts of technology.  Many people have access to view their newspaper online.  There are online magazines and news sites as well as social media sites which have news accounts that report the events.  There is also TV and radio stations which do daily reports of the news.  The news can now be reached by almost anyone within moments.  All news is there for people to view immediately now and not have to wait for the newspaper to be transported to you daily/weekly/monthly.
Newspaper Suppression-
  • I personally do not think that the government should have that kind of control over what is printed today.  I believe that each person should have freedom to report the occurrences they desire within reason.  Slandering other people and rude comments should not be allowed as it would rise a lot of controversial.  But how much control can one have over what is put out there?  If the government has control over what we can print, the real issues of the world would probably never be known.  It is also nice to have the freedom to read the positions of other people on particular matters.  When we are able to read other peoples ideas, it can help us develop ourselves as a person and our views on the world.  Having freedom to print is important to me because, you never know what ideas will come about and what controversy will be revealed.
Publishing Today-
  • Many newspapers are critical of the government but still continue to publish because in Democratic countries, the government really cannot do much about it.  I think the "Freedom of Press" laws are the reason why the government cannot shut down particular stations/newspapers who report things that the government does not agree with.  There are particular guidelines that companies and reporters must stay within when reporting events.  As long as they are following protocol, the government really do not have the control over what they post whether they agree with it or not.
Newspapers in Canada-
  • I was quite surprised to learn that the first Canadian newspaper was printed in Halifax.  I figured that it would have been printed in Ottawa or a much bigger area.  When you really think about it, it makes sense because, many of the older cities of Canada are in the maritime provinces so, Halifax printing the first Canadian newspaper would make sense. Initially most people don't immediately think of it that way.
