Journal Entry #2 - Starting with the Basics

Article #1- "The Golden Knights Announced Marc-Andre Fleury's                       First Start of the Year With the Perfect Tweet"

Who, What, When, Where, and Why:

  • The Las Vegas Golden Knights and the Montreal Canadiens.
  • Las Vegas was sending some fire comments and sassy remarks towards the Montreal Canadiens franchise.
  • This occurred on September 20th, 2017.
  • The chirping between the two teams happened on Twitter by their respective social media advisers in each teams hometown.
  • This was some friendly fire between two teams during the pre-season.  The knights were just adding some tension between the teams to make their first official season in the NHL a real splash!

The Lead:

  • The lead was quite bland in my opinion.  It could have been much better, it did not really grasp the attention of the readers.
  • "The Vegas Golden Knights may be new to the NHL, but they already have one of the leagues strongest social media games."  The quote did not give much emphasis on the issue that had arisen.
  • It would not seem very interesting for people who do not watch sports and would not immediately be interested in it.  This lame lead would have an extreme amount of difficulty in attracting viewers.
Source:
  • The sources for all of the following quotes are the Vegas Golden Knights twitter account (@GoldenKnights) and the Montreal Canadiens twitter account (@CanadiensMTL).
  • The @GoldenKnights tweeted "But we've also won TWO more times than 2CanadiensMTL have won the Stanley Cup since 1993."
  • The @CanadiensMTL replied back with "Good for you! You miss be very proud of this incredible pre-season accomplishment!"  The sarcasm in the Montreal Canadiens twitter account can be sensed.
  • The @GoldenKnights did not stop there, they came back with "We're definitely proud! But not as proud as @CanadiensMTL are of how many championships they won when there were only 6 teams in the league."
The tension between these two teams became extremely high as the day went on.  With all this pre-season drama, the two teams should come out swinging when they play vs each other during the regular season.

Information:
  • The most interesting information is told first.  The social media occurrences were hilarious and really added some interest to the article.  It was listed first.  Screenshots of the tweets were added to make viewing this crossfire much easier.
  • Although the article is about Marc Andre Fleury's chances of being the starting goaltender, the interesting part of the article is the twitter bickering between the two teams; it adds some extra spice to the article.
Ending:
  • The ending is great for hockey fans.  It gives some insight into how high the chances of Fleury being the starting goaltender in this coming season.  It also recommends the twitter account of the Golden Knights and how interesting the content already is, before the season even gets a real start.

Article #2- "Connor Carrick's Childhood Hockey Card Has a Top-                     notch Player Bio"

Who, What, When, Where and Why:
  • Connor Carrick, NHL player for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • He posted a picture of a self-made scouting report that young Connor made when he was still playing within minor hockey associations.
  • Connor's mother sent him a picture of this self-made scouting report that he made many years previous.  Connor shared this picture in a post on September 29th.
  • Connor shared this from his home via his Instagram account (@connorcarrick).
  • Connor shared this picture for a laugh.  He was showing the fans and friends a funny scouting report that he made up himself while he was a young hockey player dreaming of one day making the NHL.
The Lead:
  • The lead is quite grasping for hockey fans.  It is especially good at grabbing the attention of Leaf fans.  It mentions the excitement that Leaf fans have had since the day that Carrick was acquired from the Washington Capitals.  It also highlights some of Carrick's strong points within the game, including his smooth stride and natural ability to skate with the puck and create a play.
Source:
  • The main source is Connor Carrick's original Instagram post via his account @connorcarrick.
  • The post had the photo of Connor's self-made scouting report captioned by him "3'9" 46 lbs. Also, was the proud owner of a Charizard at the time. Thanks for sending me this Mom. #SelfMadeScoutingReport"
Information:
  • The most important information is not told first.  The first information is a lead in about Connor's skills and the excitement around him being a Toronto Maple Leaf.
  • It then goes on to talk about how Connor made this scouting report for himself, and how he was proud of his "Phenomenal Skating" back when he was young.  Still, to this day scouts notice his fantastic skating abilities.
Ending:
  • The ending shows Connors Instagram post.  It is a well-executed piece on Connor.  The ending also includes some information on how Connor will be a big factor on the Leafs blue line this coming season.  This is a really interesting article, especially for fans and friends of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Carrick himself.
