Local hockey star gives back to tornado-damaged community (headline)

A tornado ripped through the community of Lukeville, Czech Republic, destroying the only Arena within 200 km of the community.

When NHL player Reuben Scharwinsky, Lukeville native, got wind of this devastating story, he immediately jumped into action.  The tornado split the "Schofield Place" arena practically in half on February 7th, 2018, by February 9th, Scharwinsky had the plans for rebuilding the arena sprung into action.

Scharwinsky decided to rebuild the arena that built his career.  The 55 million dollar building is slated to begin construction on April 19th, projected to be fully up and running by October 17th, 2019; just in time for the 2019-2020 hockey season.

The building plans include a European sized ice surface, 9 large dressing rooms, including a personal dressing room devoted for the Midget AAA Mariners, Junior A Flagners and EEHL Wildcats.  A personal gym for the rep teams will also be installed into the arena.

Warming room, canteen, walking-track and fan apparel store will be available for the community to access.

The community is extremely thankful for the unconditional support and love that Scharwinsky has shown towards his hometown.

"I am so fired up for this new rink, the boys are so excited to get the 2019 season going on a European sized ice surface.  For the remainder of this season and next, our team will have to drive hours just for practices and games.  We all cannot wait to be back playing on home ice in front of our fans!  The future is looking bright for us!"  Bantam AAA captain Radim Scheneck explained.

"That arena holds a special place in my heart.  I was on the ice when the incident happened.  As soon as I heard, I knew exactly what I had to do.  That old barn (arena) was my home for the first 17 years of my life.  I practically learned how to skate before I could walk.  My brothers and I spent countless hours shooting pucks there every day.  I would never want any of the children from my home to grow up without the opportunity to play the game that shaped me as a person."  Scharwinsky explained.

Scharwinsky grew up in the small town.  He currently holds the "Point Records" for the Bantam AAA and Midget AAA Mariners.  He was a huge part of the EEHL Wildcats, as he went first overall in 2011 to his hometown team.

He also represented his country at the 2013, 2014 and 2015 IIHF World Juniors Championships, coming home with an almost perfect record of 2 gold medals and one silver in 2015.

Scharwinsky was drafted 1st overall to the Tampa bay Lightning in 2014 at the age of 17, being the first person in history to receive "Exceptional Status" and get drafted a year before his personal draft year.  He is signed on with the Lightning for 7 years, raking in 17 million a year.

During his 3rd season of the NHL, Scharwinsky is currently leading the league in points with 97 points (55 goals, 42 assists).  The Lightning are sitting at the top of the league with high hopes to win the Stanley Cup.

The community of Lukeville is thankful for Scharwinsky's generosity to save the game that the community is built around.  Lukeville is wishing Scharwinsky the best of luck as he continues on with this record season.
